TINA KAROL

Tina studied piano at music school before attending the legendary Kyiv State Glier Higher Music College.

But it was Tina’s energetic nature that brought her to the world of aviation soon afterwards. Today, she studies at the Kyiv National Aviation University and is the soloist of the Armed Forces Song and Dance Ensemble.

Despite her young age, the singer has already won more than 23 international contests and festivals. But Tina is not only just a pop singer – she performs on the stage of professional theatres and takes leading roles in musicals. With such an intensive working schedule, Tina still has time to host a music-based TV show on one of Ukrainian most popular channels – a show aimed at supporting talented children from poor families.

Tina took part in a 17-date charitable tour of the US, taking in New York, Philadelphia, Dallas, Detroit, Houston and Milwaukee.

2005 was Tina’s finest year: She participated in the Russian Charitable Ball in London, at the Royal Residence and won first prize at Novaya Volna, an international contest for young pop singers. Tina received public recognition and was named ‘Woman of the Year’ and ‘Finding of the Year’.

More importantly, in the same year Tina Karol carried out peacemaking missions to two of the world’s trouble spots – Iraq and Kosovo. The singer performed to international peace-making contingents in Baghdad and Al-Kut (Iraq), and it wasn’t only Ukrainian soldiers that applauded her; American, Georgian and British troops also responded enthusiastically. In Kosovo, the Ukrainian singer was invited to Paris by French peacemakers.

Because of these performances, the Ukrainian Minister of Defence decorated the singer with a state order for peacemaking missions.

Tina opened 2006 by releasing her debut album.

Tina Karol.
The beginning.

Tina Karol was born on the 25 January 1985 in the far North of Russia – in the town of Orotukan, Magadan to a family of ethnic Ukrainians. Tina’s parents were engineers. The day she was born it was very cold – the temperature was about 50 degrees below zero!

After Ukraine gained its independence, Tina’s family received a letter from their home country that told them about significant changes and so, in 1992, the family came back to Ukraine.

Tina’s parents explained their decision in a very simple way: “Even before then we were very disappointed by the fact that our children had been deprived of the usual wonders of the spring – they had never seen gardens in blossom, the clear blue Ukrainian sky in May… As you know, the summer is very short in Magadan and there is no spring at all. It’s almost always winter!”

When she was 12, Tina began singing professionally. Her managerial abilities and skills as a producer came to light during her years of her study at the famous Kyiv State Glier Higher Music College. As a young student, Tina created her own band, which was totally self-supporting. During the fourth year of study Tina’s singing abilities came to the attention of the state. Her music college submitted an application for a government grant for Tina. As a result, during 2003 and 2004, Tina was a Verkhovna Rada (Ukrainian Parliament) performer.

As part of her studies at musical school, Tina had to take part in ‘academic concerts’, in which each student had to give a fully-fledged performance for the teachers. Usually such concerts are not very lively, because the professors prefer to evaluate the performances in silence, professionally, and reservedly. But Tina’s student concerts attracted her friends and other people who had heard about her and wanted to see her perform. Tina’s performances tended to end in rapturous applause, which was a bit annoying for the teachers. They didn’t consider such recognition acceptable.

Tina worked her way to the top pretty much on her own, relying only on her parents – especially her mum, who was in fact her first producer. And, of course, many different people helped her with all their hearts.

Now Tina Karol has an opportunity to realise her precious dream – and support talented children all over the world. She wants to help those children who are gifted but lack wealthy parents and, thus, the opportunity to improve.

Tina Karol named ‘Ukraine’s Best Female Solo Artist’

On 22 April, Tina Karol was named the ‘Best Female Artist’ of her home country, Ukraine. She arrived at the National Opera of Ukraine, at which the ‘Showbiz’ awards were being held, in great spirits. She was dressed elegantly in a luxurious pink evening gown, specially purchased for the award ceremony.

“We were going for a Greek style in my dress and haircut,” said Tina. But the dress was certainly no good luck charm. Just 30 seconds into her rehearsal for her performance of ‘Show Me Your Love’, a metal part of the drum kit fell from the height of the curtains right onto the dress, tearing a hole in it.

“If Tina hadn’t stepped aside half a minute earlier, she would have been in big trouble,” said Oleg Chornyy, Tina’s producer.

However, the award ceremony itself was great. The prize was presented by Natalia Mohylevska, a popular Ukrainian singer, who wished Tina all the best for Athens.

Since winning the Ukrainian national selection for the 2006 Eurovision Song Contest, Tina Karol has been actively preparing for her journey to Greece.

Tina’s producer Oleg Chorny is responsible for her stage performance.

The video clip for her song ‘Show Me Your Love’ was shot in less than a week and was written by 2005 Eurovision host Pavlo Shylko, better known as DJ Pasha. During the shoot, Tina brought in new ideas of her own and improvised a lot.

The clip was shot at Kayf, a popular Kyiv restaurant, and at the Pomada night club. It was directed by Herman Hlynsky, who had successfully worked with the singer before.

Tina has four costume changes in the clip – all of the dresses were created by Ukrainian designers. In the video, she is accompanied by a ballerina.

“Since my song is about love, we decided that the song shouldn’t just focus on relationships between men and women. We will show different representations of youth,” explains Tina.

Tina Karol. Show Me Your Love.

Several absolutely young but bright personalities have appeared on the stage – and Tina Karol’ is, certainly, one of them. It is even surprising how quickly she passed the way from the first public performance, the first video clip – to participation in the international competition of variety performers. But she did pass it – and, actually, her vocal makings deserve recognition. With music everything is also ok – but it is a somewhat different thing. What Tina Karol’ is doing now is pop music of the international level and appropriate quality. But I hope that it not forever – as with such voice as hers, it is also possible to sing with the same success folk songs, R'n'B, soul, and disco, and try and search for something in jazz. In general, qualitative pop music already contains various elements today, it is normal. But with such characteristics as those of Tina Karol’, I think, it would be rational to try more purposeful, precisely outlined experiments in various directions, styles. Having listened through the album, I suppose, you will also consider that such a bright start is just obliged to have not less bright continuation. The album is, by the way, in English. Not surprisingly – as it appeared right on the eve of Tina’s departure for participation in the Eurovision competition.
